Zoning Administration

Cities, towns and villages in New York State are authorized by state statutes, called “zoning enabling laws," to regulate the use and development of land by enacting what is commonly referred to as "zoning.” Its goal is to carry out the City's long range land use objectives in accordance with its comprehensive plan.

Zoning Administration is a division of Code Enforcement and part of the Department of Neighborhood and Business Development. Zoning and preservation administration are all functions of how land is used and developed in the city. Our strategy for function administering land use now happens within the same department as the city's permittinglicensing, and code enforcement.

Zoning administration also includes activities at city commissions and boards such as: City Planning Commission (CPC), Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA), and Syracuse Landmark Preservation Board (SLPB).
